O Dear Hallowed Court Friends,
Today was one of the biggest days in the History of the Court.
Today, our film “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” 4 years in the making, was finally available to be seen by the greater public, in a theater.
This is a day we had hence only dreamed of. And it seems that people like the film!
Yes, there is much that’s happened in the last five months — a little bit of hardware (Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, Camera d’Or at Cannes), an extensive U.S. tour with the film that’s wrapping up now, Sean Payton was suspended for a season — but today American audiences in New York and Los Angeles could walk up to a ticket booth and say “One for that Court 13 picture, please!” In one week, people in New Orleans will be able to do the same. And soon after, people in nearly every major American city. That’s pretty incredible.
And you’re the Court 13 faithful — the ones that knew about us when we were nutria in the dark, dank swamps of independent filmmaking. You get what we’re up to, that’s why you’re reading this now. You know we stand for fiercely independent, insanely challenging, populist filmmaking. Admittedly, we’re not your typical flick in the multiplex. Now we are writing you both because we want to celebrate with you, and because we’re relying on ye our most loyal supporters to expand our reach — to take this thing we made to those who don’t yet know about Court 13 but who, like you, share our spirit. Everyone’s got a little Court in them: it’s that soft spot between your spine and your heart. “Beasts” is the film that’ll massage the heck out of that thing.
1) We’ve launched a site, where you can both find out how/when/where to see the film, and how to be a part of the “Beasts” team in its birth into the world at large. The last, ultimate challenge for this crazy movie we made is bringing it to the public, and having them experience it, in all sorts of different ways. A trip to the theater with friends, a discussion afterwards at a bar, a debate with your college professor. We want it all.
We really believe that if we get audiences to “Beasts,” and vice versa, they will embrace it, and love it, and spread the word about it. But we can’t do that without the help of the Court 13 squadron (that’s you), and your ideas of what you want to do with it.
2) Because you’re our friends, our neighbors, our compatriots, our main dudes, we wanted to give you a piece of privileged information that may not have caught on with the public: just hours ago, the soundtrack to “Beasts of the Southern Wild” dropped on iTunes. If you liked the “Glory at Sea” or “Death to the Tinman” soundtrack, Dan and Benh have MUCH more where that came from. 17 rollicking, riveting, heartbreaking tracks. And it’s only $10:
That is all. We hope you join us for the next leg of the journey. This sucker’s just getting started.
